Expert Scientist - Bioinformatician

The Company

GSK is a science-led global healthcare company that researches and develops a broad range of innovative products in three primary areas of Pharmaceuticals, Vaccines and Consumer Healthcare.
We have a significant global presence with commercial operations in more than 150 countries, a network of 86 manufacturing sites in 36 countries and large R&D centres in the UK, USA, Spain, Belgium and China.

Research is vitally important to the success of our business, and we spent just £3.4 billion in 2013 in our search to develop new medicines, vaccines and innovative consumer products. We are one of the few healthcare companies researching medicines and vaccines for the World Health Organization's three priority diseases - HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

Our Vaccines business is one of the largest in the world, producing paediatric and adult vaccines against a range of infectious diseases. In 2013, we distributed more than 860 million doses to 170 countries, of which over 80% were supplied to developing countries.

At GSK Vaccines, we employ over 12,000 people worldwide, including more than 8,000 at our global headquarters in Belgium. Almost a quarter of our staff work in research and clinical development, inventing new and innovative vaccines against some of the world's most serious infections and diseases. For more information please visit www.gsk.com<http://www.gsk.com>

Our Vaccines Discovery & Development (VDD) department gives our business its competitive edge, both in improving the quality of existing GSK vaccines and in generating ideas and concepts for innovative new products.

Our VDD process seeks to push boundaries while taking a realistic approach to technology, partnerships, and using available resources wisely. We also emphasise the value of teamwork and responsibility in developing new vaccines.

The department undertakes research in four disease areas: Viral & Allergy Vaccines, Bacterial Vaccines, Emerging Diseases & HIV, and Cancer Vaccines. A substantial proportion of our VDD programme is oriented towards controlling diseases that hit the poorest countries hardest.

Clinical studies are currently being carried out to assess the efficacy of vaccines against TB, HIV/AIDS, and malaria, while vaccines for dengue and other developing world diseases are at an earlier stage of development.

Application Deadline:

If interested, please apply by 3/08/2014 by 23:59 P.M.

Job Purpose

The Bioinformatics group within the R&D of GSK Vaccines is currently seeking a highly motivated and long experienced Expert Scientist-Bioinformatician, to contribute to the support of the vaccine projects in their multiple and diverse bioinformatics needs, in all aspects of genetics, genomics, proteomics and sequence/structure data analysis.

The candidate will have an interdisciplinary background in biology and bioinformatics/computational biology, in particular in all aspects of gene and protein sequence analysis, both theoretically and practically. A good understanding and practice of concepts and tools in the field of protein structure is also mandatory. A working knowledge of microarray and NGS technologies, software tools and data analysis methods is definitely a plus.

Responsibilities

The Expert Scientist-Bioinformatician will play a key role in the bioinformatics analysis of internal, external and public data relevant to the vaccine projects. The candidate will employ all necessary bioinformatics methods, tools and infrastructure in close cooperation with scientists from vaccine project teams. The Bioinformatician will be embedded in and supported by the whole Research and Preclinical Development team.

The job involves:

· Performing, and supervising, gene and protein sequence and structure analysis.

· Interacting with research project teams, and reporting to them on work progress.

· Participation to definition and improvement of the computing environment, both for hardware and software tools.

· Leading and managing a group of people.

· Sharing expertise and know-how, and learning from scientists.

· Driving contacts with external colleagues and academic research.

Profile

· The ideal candidate holds a PhD in Life Sciences or Computer science; in the latter case, familiarity with molecular biology and immunology is desirable.

· Expertise and experience in sequence data analysis and protein structure is required, and familiarity with microarray data processing, preferably with R+Bioconductor, and with NGS data analysis, is a plus. Some proficiency in programming (Perl, Python, C++, R) and a basic knowledge of statistics is also requested.

· Capacity to plan and deliver on time, as well as excellent communication and people management skills are a must.

· The candidate will be willing to learn every day, will be open, creative, and can work autonomously.

· The candidate will also be fluent in French & English (oral and written).

Our Offer

At GSK we provide a supportive working environment, and a range of development challenges and opportunities. We also offer competitive benefits and compensation packages designed to attract.
