Dear all, The Applications for the Introductory Bioinformatics course, second instance in the 2015 Programme, are now OPEN. IMPORTANT DATES for this Course Deadline for applications: December 9th 2015 Latest notification of acceptance: December 10th 2015 Course date: December 14th - April 18th 2015 Details are available here: http://gtpb.igc.gulbenkian.pt/bicourses/IB15S/ This is an entry level course aimed that those with a reasonable biological background but no significant experience with bioinformatics. The course is broadly based around a series of exercises in which a combination of simple analytical tools and reference to publicly available databases is applied to the investigation of a single human gene. The training manual for the course is comprised of detailed instructions for the tasks undertaken. Included are, questions (with answers) and discussion of and the interpretation of the results achieved. Participants are asked to imagine an interest in the disease aniridia. Course exercises then provide extremely detailed instruction leading participants to discover the gene primarily associated with this disease and all that is interesting about that gene and its protein products. This course will also provide a soft introduction to Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis. This part of the course aims at providing basic skills that are needed when one needs to process NGS data, such as evaluating data quality, trimming sequences, changing data formats, visualising data, etc. Then, participants will learn how to address a simple transcriptomics problem, stepwise, using open source bioinformatics tools. We are looking for dedicated individuals to join the BITS team in Ghent who will jointly work in projects for several Bioinformatics groups at VIB (http://www.vib.be/en/research/scientists/Pages/default.aspx?category=Bioinf…) The candidate needs to have outstanding communication skills to establish a close working relationship with the bioinformaticians and developers within the VIB departments and the staff of the BITS core facility. TPNC 2015 will be held in Mieres (Spain) on 15-16 December, 2015. What they do. How their molecular interactions, including feedback circuitry, give rise to cellular properties, such as sensing, adaptation, division and death, that transcend those of single molecules. This includes figuring out how gene mutations, causing changes in proteins, cause networks, and their cellular hosts, to malfunction. In order to do this, systems biology focusses on the dynamics of molecular networks, using quantitative experiments and mathematical modeling. Mathematical models help systems biologists to figure out: i. how molecular properties relate to the functional, systemic properties of molecular networks, and ii. how molecular networks assist in the survival and functioning of cells. This 1-week course serves as an introduction to mathematical modeling as it is used in systems biology. *Target audience* This course does not require any introductory reading or courses, it should be accessible to students with diverse backgrounds. *Course programme* We start from physical and chemical principles of molecules, cells and reactions. Next, you will learn how you can relate the changes in the concentrations of molecules over time to the activity of reactions and the underlying molecular properties. You will be introduced to enzyme kinetics and the dynamics of small enzyme systems, in metabolism and signal transduction. We also briefly deal with models of genetic circuits. We will illustrate a number of unexpected, functional properties of molecular networks that can be studied with simple mathematical models. You will make and analyse models yourself, on paper and with software. We will close the week with a short overview of some more advanced topics, to introduce you to approaches and concepts that you will often hear about in systems biology. The symposium is a satellite meeting of the BeNeLux Bio-informatics conference (http://bbc2015.be/ ) and will take place Sunday 6th of December Afternoon in the Institute of tropical medicine, Antwerp. For its Epigenetics division and under the supervision of the Epigenetics R&D Manager, Diagenode is looking for a highly motivated, team-orientated individual Bioinformatics Project Manager. Brief posting description: * Interact directly with customers and lend scientific expertise toward understanding and assessing customers’ needs, communicating progress, explaining significance of results, and troubleshooting technical issues * Generate professional technical reports for delivery to customers in a timely manner to meet sales delivery schedules * Contribute expertise toward development of value-added improvements to existing analysis pipelines and technical reports based on emerging industry technologies and customer feedback * Work in a team of bioinformaticians with complementary skills on ongoing biological projects utilizing Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) focused on epigenetic analyses * Develop bioinformatics projects in line with the diverse needs of the department Job description: * Oversees bioinformatics work for ChIP-seq and methylation studies (e.g. ChIP-seq, RRBS, MeDIP-seq, hMeDIP-seq) projects in the R&D Epigenetics department of Diagenode * Coordinate project timelines and progression for ~15 projects at any given time * Manages contact with external customers * Becomes the key contact person for bioinformatics-related projects with academic and industrial partners * Coordinates contact with customers related to bioinformatics projects * Work with Diagenode developers to design and enhance the epigenetic bioinformatics software lab’s pipeline to meet customer’s requirements Required qualifications: * Master degree in Bioinformatics preferred * Minimum 3 years of experience in working with NGS data analysis, ideally in applications related to Epigenetics (ChIp and Methylation), and with a strong knowledge of the related biological studies * Proven experience in project management * Experience with coding through R, SHELL, Python and Perl languages under Linux environment * Experience with statistical and database software * Fluent in English, French or other languages are a plus * Strong organizational and time management skills, well-organized, independent * Rigour and attention to details * Excellent interpersonal skills * Excellent oral and written communication skills Eligibility criteria: All nationalities, including Belgian, the condition is to have spent less than 12 months over the last three years in Belgium.
