International Chemical Discovery & Design Course, 1-12 July 2013, Nijmegen. We would like to draw your attention to the 9th annual International Chemical Discovery & Design Course (http://www.cmbi.ru.nl/ICDD2013) which will be held from July 1st till July 12^th at the Radboud University Nijmegen. The course is jointly organized by the Computational Drug Discovery (CDD) group of the Centre for Molecular and Biomolecular Informatics (CMBI), The Netherlands eScience Center, and The Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre (NBIC). This course covers the recent advances in discovery informatics, with a focus on the application of escience to real life problems. The course, combining practicals and lectures, will introduce and discuss different scientific concepts as well as providing an opportunity to gain practical experience using industry standard software. You can expect lectures and practicals on the following topics (see also the attachment for the complete programme): * Introduction to Computational Discovery & Design. * Comparative Protein Modelling. * Sequence Retrieval, Analysis and Alignment Techniques. * Computational Medicinal Chemistry; Molecular Descriptors & Library Design. * The Application of Computational Drug Design to Real Life Problems. * Molecular Docking and Virtual Screening. * Advanced 3D Database Searches and Scaffold Hopping. * QSAR and COMFA methods. * Structure Based Drug Design Techniques. * Text Mining. Since 2010, it has been highly successful. Description Python Python is an object-oriented programming language that is ideal for biological data analysis. The course will start from zero knowledge, and will cover all basic concepts of Python, including variables, calculating, reading and writing files, control flow, modules, functions, exceptions. All examples and practical sessions will focus on solving biological problems. In particular the sessions will cover: - working with DNA and protein sequences - data retrieval from files and their manipulation - running applications, such as BLAST, locally and from a scrip - finding motifs in sequence - parsing Swiss-Prot files, PDB files, ENSEMBL records, blast output files, etc. - Biopython The course will be highly interactive and the students will continuously put theory into practice while learning. By the end of the course, the participants will have a good understanding of Python basics and will have acquired the skills to manage any type of bioinformatics database record and to run applications from scripts. Basic Unix/linux skills will be provided at the beginning of the course. Target Audience End-users of bioinformatics databases and tools that aim at developing hands-on capabilities for biological data analysis, ie writing their own or adapting somebody else's Python scripts in an autonomous way. Course Pre-requisites Basic familiarity with bioinformatics data resources such as Uniprot/Swiss-Prot, Blast, ENSEMBL, PDB, etc. The course is directed to biologists with little or no programming experience and aims at making them capable to use Python to autonomously manage and analyse biological data. Project leader positions at IECB – Bordeaux 2013 The European Institute of Chemistry and Biology, Institut Européen de Chimie et Biologie (IECB, www.iecb.u-bordeaux.fr) is a research team incubator placed under the joint authority of the University of Bordeaux, CNRS and INSERM. It benefits from the strong scientific environment of the Bordeaux campus in the Southwest of France. The Institute hosts 16 research groups working at the interface of chemistry and biology in a recent building (6000 sq meters) with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. The scientific policy of the institute is under the responsibility of an International Scientific Advisory Board, in charge of the selection of new group leaders. IECB is looking for outstanding candidates who will complement the existing strength of the Institute in: • SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY We are interested in projects aiming at re-programming, re-constructing life through the use of microbiology, molecular biology, molecular engineering or mathematical modelling. Projects related to cell cycle or development will be considered with particular interest • CHEMICAL BIOLOGY We are looking for chemical biologists interested in the development of novel molecular approaches towards the understanding and modulation of biological functions, and the upstream development of innovative therapeutic or diagnostic tools. • BIO-INSPIRED NANOTECHNOLOGY and MOLECULAR BIOPHYSICS We seek biochemists/biophysicists developing protein/nucleic acid scaffolds, techniques for single molecule analysis, or devices of potential interest in the field of technologies for health, in particular biomaterials or imaging. Applicants are expected to run independent and creative projects. They should be open to interdisciplinary collaborations with other groups of the institute. Successful candidates will have access to IECB’s facilities in structural biology, chemistry, molecular and cellular biology. The candidates will be asked to apply for start-up funding such as ATIP-Avenir Inserm-CNRS programme, FRM "amorçage", ANR support or ERC funding. The applicants should be fluent in English. Knowledge of French is not mandatory.
