
Cancer Research Program Peter Wills Bioinformatics Centre Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney The Garvan Institute's Cancer Research Program and Peter Wills Bioinformatics Centre is looking to fill the position of a Cancer Senior Bioinformatics & Statistics Research Officer. The Garvan Institute is actively engaged in medical research into major human diseases involving molecular, cellular, genetic, epigenetic and clinical research. The Cancer Research Program is an integrated series of strongly interactive Research Groups undertaking research aimed at increasing the international knowledge base on the development, progression, treatment and prevention of human cancers. The Peter Wills Bioinformatics Centre (PWBC) at the Garvan Institute collaborates with researchers in a wide range of bioinformatics areas including analysis and housing of microarray data, structural bioinformatics and clinical data management. Role: The role offers an exciting opportunity to work alongside bioinformaticians in the PWBC and experimental scientists in the Garvan's Cancer Research Program. Funded by the NSW Cancer Institute the primary role of the Senior Bioinformatics & Statistics Research Officer will be to assist in the experimental design and analysis of array experiments and clinical trial data. In particular analysis of gene expression and DNA methylation patterns in clinical samples is required. Candidates will have a strong background in multi-univariate and Bayesian statistics, and some experience in machine-learning techniques. Knowledge of the R programming language and experience with BioConductor is desirable. The successful applicant will also be given freedom and encouragement to further develop statistical techniques for data analysis. Remuneration: The position is available from October 2008. It is a full-time fixed term appointment for one year in the first instance with renewal subject to funding and performance. The remuneration package will be in the range of $65-80 per annum, which includes employer superannuation contributions of 14%.
