PhD Course: Optimisation Techniques in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology

*PhD Course: Optimisation Techniques in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology* On May 17-21, 2010 the NBIC PhD School organises the PhD Course ‘Optimisation Techniques in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology’ in Amsterdam. Course Lecturers: Jaap Kaandorp (coordinator), Jaap Heringa, Antoine van Kampen Course Description Optimization, in general, is concerned with finding one or more optimal solutions given a problem. Many optimization problems are very difficult to solve. In many different problems from bioinformatics and systems biology (e.g. multi parameter estimation, reverse engineering of gene networks, multi-alignment problem, 3D structure prediction etc.) various optimisation methods are applied. In this course you will get acquainted with the underlying mathematics of optimization and with a selection of local and global optimization methods. In addition, several examples of optimization problems in life sciences will be presented and discussed. The course is aimed at at PhD students with a background in bioinformatics, systems biology, computer science or a related field. A working knowledge of basic statistics, linear algebra and differential equations is assumed, but will be reviewed during the first day of the course. After this course a student should have an overview and basic understanding of optimisation methods frequently applied in bioinformatics and systems biology. More information about the course, including information about the course programme, can be found on http://www.nbic.nl/education/nbic-phd-school/course-schedule/optimisation-te... . Please note: the course is free for PhD students working in a BioRange (including matching) or BioAssist project. Others can participate as well when paying a course fee (see http://www.nbic.nl/education/nbic-phd-school/enrolment/). This course is part of the Education Programme of the NBIC PhD School. The PhD School is an initiative of NBIC together with a number of universities to organize high level education and training for PhD-students in bioinformatics. More information about the latest developments of the NBIC PhD School can also be found on the NBIC website (www.nbic.nl <http://www.nbic.nl> -> Education -> NBIC PhD School).
