The opening is a research position within the field of *computational biology*. The candidate will contribute to the development of algorithmic and statistical methods for problems involving biological networks. These include network alignment, comparison, and query problems as well as subnetwork identification problems that require the integration of additional data, like gene expression or survival data. A large part of the work will be the application of these methods to biologically or medically relevant problems such as the identification of functional modules in protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks by means of detecting jointly differentially expressed network regions. The ideal candidate * has excellent knowledge of the underlying biological mechanisms * is able to turn his or her knowledge into software tools * has experience with or is willing to learn aspects of discrete optimization, algorithmics, and statistics The candidate is expected to have a demonstrated record of excellent research and to be able to carry out his own research agenda and to collaborate with colleagues at CWI and other institutions.
