Dear all, Please find below the most recent Bioinformatics Training offerings from VIB BITS. Cheers, Alex --------Forwarded message-------- From: BITS <janick.mathys@vib.be<mailto:janick.mathys@vib.be>> Date: vr, apr. 03, 2015 at 2:33 PM Subject: Fwd: Upcoming Bioinformatics Training Sessions [VIB] [VIB] VIB Bioinformatics Training May sessions IN THIS ISSUE * Introduction to MySQL<about:blank> * Comparative genomics in eukaryotes<about:blank> * Introduction to the analysis of NGS data<about:blank> * Hands-on introduction to ChIP-Seq analysis<about:blank> Introduction to MySQL This hands-on training provides a comprehensive introduction to relational databases and the use of the MySQL<http://bits.cmail1.com/t/r-l-ctluyuk-shyuuqkd-j/> relational database management system. The training will * show you how to use MySQL to efficiently store your data in databases * give an overview of the SQL syntax that allows you to access and manipulate the data * show you how to use Python to automatically access MySQL databases Requirements: The training is aimed at SQL/database novices. However, for the second day a very basic knowledge of Python programming is required. Date: 4 and 7 May Location: Holiday Inn, Gent Trainer: Gerben Menschaert (BioBix<http://bits.cmail1.com/t/r-l-ctluyuk-shyuuqkd-t/>) More information and registration: VIB website<http://bits.cmail1.com/t/r-l-ctluyuk-shyuuqkd-i/> Comparative genomics in eukaryotes At the end of this training, participants will understand the principles and possible applications of comparative genomics. They will know how comparative genomics is used to: * annotate and characterize gene families * annotate and characterize genomes * transfer information from one species to another * identify transcription factor-binding sites in promoters based on cross-species comparisons Date: 13 May Location: Bio-Accelerator, Gent Trainer: Klaas Vandepoele (PSB<http://bits.cmail1.com/t/r-l-ctluyuk-shyuuqkd-d/>) More information and registration: VIB website<http://bits.cmail1.com/t/r-l-ctluyuk-shyuuqkd-h/> Introduction to the analysis of NGS data This training is an introduction to the Hands-on introduction to ChIP-Seq analysis<http://bits.cmail1.com/t/r-l-ctluyuk-shyuuqkd-k/> training. It is intended for newbies to the field and will teach them all background knowledge required to successfully complete the ChIP-Seq training. To this end the training will give an overview of: * NGS applications and their data analysis workflows * NGS data formats and file handling * Quality control of NGS data * Mapping of NGS data * IT skills required to analyze NGS data: e.g. Linux command line, Galaxy... Requirements: If you registered for the ChIP-Seq training<http://bits.cmail1.com/t/r-l-ctluyuk-shyuuqkd-u/> and you have no experience with NGS data or Linux command line, register for the waiting list of this training. We will try to get you a spot. Date: 22 and 29 May Location: Park Inn, Leuven Trainer: Janick Mathys (BITS<http://bits.cmail1.com/t/r-l-ctluyuk-shyuuqkd-o/>) More information and registration: VIB website<http://bits.cmail1.com/t/r-l-ctluyuk-shyuuqkd-b/> Hands-on introduction to ChIP-Seq analysis This training gives an introduction to ChIP-seq data analysis, covering the processing steps starting from the reads to the peaks. Concretely, you will: * perform a complete analysis workflow including QC, mapping, visualization and peak-calling * use command line and open source software for each each step of the workflow * have an overview of possible downstream analyses * perform a motif analysis with online web programs Requirements: If you have no experience with NGS data or Linux command line, register for the waiting list of the Introduction to the analysis of NGS data training<http://bits.cmail1.com/t/r-l-ctluyuk-shyuuqkd-n/>. We will try to get you a spot.
