Never heard of this, but I'll give it a try.
To make it even stranger, the problem solved itself. I didn't even get a chance to try the winsock reset. In some way the WinXP auto-update updated. So either the updates were already downloaded and by updating the problem went away, or the problem went away automagically so the updates could be downloaded. Either way, I got a call that mails were coming in again, so I suppose all's well that ends well.
