
meh, solution found: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split_tunneling http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/products_configuration_example091... just use the cisco vpn client software, and configure it so that thunderbird goes through the vpn, and all other programs through the "normal" network.
