This is a great idea. I actually wanted to do this myself last year (after having experienced the being-new bit) but never got round to do it. I'd love to help you guys. Below some extra ideas, I'll come back to it once I have more. Maybe not send to the whole of BEG right away : at binari there's enough people to brainstorm, create a first version, then send it to BEG. I don't think you need Yves' permission, I'm guessing he'll be happy with the initiative anyway. - What different servers are available and what they are for (midas, the sysbiol things, etc) - where the different meeting rooms are (leef, seminar, pc room etc), how you can make a reservation for them - poster/presentation layouts (are these still used)? See mail Tine (I think) a few months ago - report to kenny when you have a poster/paper submitted/publised to put on the website - how to make a personal website (docs in "my public html") - how you should use the network drives etc (sysbiol / annotation shares?) Don't have any more time to think, atm. Sofie Esther-Kristin Lather wrote:
Hi Binari!
A coffeebreak-subgroup of us has just thought about how to improve the procedure of becoming-a-new-member-in-BEG. (It came into my head because we have so many new people at the moment and I was wondering if they get such a good introduction like I had and if there is a person who is responsible for it.) As it apparently lays all in the hand of the supervisor of the new person and of other people being friendly to the new one (which depends on so many things...). I/we thought we could make some kind of paper/guide for new people where there is everything in to know. Kenny and I just did some brainstorming (see below) and we ask you to add more things and to contribute (maybe someone wants to explain several points in more detail?). Kenny will put it on to the Wiki.
Oh, and should I send this to the whole BEG, should we ask Yves who is not there?
Greetings, Esther.

working title: The New Peoples Guide To The BEG
- lunch: get sandwich, bring your own stuff (there are microwaves), ...(other possibilities?) usually you can find people from the group between 12 and 13 in the room downstairs, sometimes some are going to the restaurant "Autostrade". There will be a mail send around then. - candy, coffee - you don't have to understand the mails from Yves without subject or content - oh, and he is mostly not there - but he is nice - weekly update/ report - BEG-lunch meeting Tuesdays, organized by Nathalie - monthly newsletter, by Kenny & Sophie, introduce yourself - abbreviations BEG = ..., SYSBio (?) = ..., PSB = ..., VIB = ... - mailinglists (BEG, BEG-fun, research, all, ...) - ministers and what they do - wiki, were is it, what can be found there - site to look up who the fuck the person is that writes you mails and the to realize that he/she is sitting 1-5 meter air-line distance to you: http://bioinformatics.psb.ugent.be/people (also useful: finger) - send mail with photo and CV to Kenny to get onto the page - there is a fietsenstalling in the garage... (I actually didn't know and the one in the front is always crowded when you come after 9:20) - you should read all science-fiction books, and watch all sci-fi and horror movies... ;-) - talk of Dirk every three months and drink afterwards - parties... (chess cafe, others?) - some people sitting in the big room are not BEG (so you don't have to know them all) - brainstorming - ...
