My online games dont work, torrents dont work, its limited so pulling datasets in is a bad idea, its slower since all traffic has to go through the UGent scanners. VPNs for accessing sensitive data, or licensed software or special resource (scientific journals) OK For all other reasons VPNs is just annoying and useless Sofie Van Landeghem wrote:
Why should I be serving on UGent network every freaking second of my free time? That makes no sense!

This might not really be a popular opinion here, but it's really not that hard to create a vpn connection, is it? I understand it might be a bit across the ocean, but here in flanders it's not really that much of an issue imho.

Is this the reason why I couldn't access my mail with Thunderbird yesterday evening from home??? Hey, that's unfair! (Could we throw something at IT?)

Hi all,
IT downstairs has a new policy. The IMAP mailserver is only available from within the UGent VPN or from webmail. I asked to make the SMTP server also available outside the VPN, but apparently they misunderstood me.
Webmail is too much of a hassle and the VPN is too slow over the ocean. As such, I will no longer be checking this e-mail address on a regular basis, maybe just once every few days.
