Hi Binari! A coffeebreak-subgroup of us has just thought about how to improve the procedure of becoming-a-new-member-in-BEG. (It came into my head because we have so many new people at the moment and I was wondering if they get such a good introduction like I had and if there is a person who is responsible for it.) As it apparently lays all in the hand of the supervisor of the new person and of other people being friendly to the new one (which depends on so many things...). I/we thought we could make some kind of paper/guide for new people where there is everything in to know. Kenny and I just did some brainstorming (see below) and we ask you to add more things and to contribute (maybe someone wants to explain several points in more detail?). Some more general info (perhaps also included in the UGent brochure): - where can you repair your bike - for foreign students: where is the rectoraat located (when you have to be there) - who of the secretaries is responsible for what (diane, sophie,...) - what are the different rooms (leaf, meeting room, jozef schnell) - you cannot eat in the blue seats in front - ... This is a great idea. I actually wanted to do this myself last year (after having experienced the being-new bit) but never got round to do it. I'd love to help you guys. Below some extra ideas, I'll come back to it once I have more. Maybe not send to the whole of BEG right away : at binari there's enough people to brainstorm, create a first version, then send it to BEG. I don't think you need Yves' permission, I'm guessing he'll be happy with the initiative anyway. - What different servers are available and what they are for (midas, the sysbiol things, etc) - where the different meeting rooms are (leef, seminar, pc room etc), how you can make a reservation for them - poster/presentation layouts (are these still used)? I proposed this idea a few years back at the brainstorm, when I was new. But since I stopped being new shortly afterwards, I didn't follow-up on the idea.
