Did someone submit lot's of jobs to the cluster? Restarting the cluster master on chione results in a segmentation fault. If you did, please empty you queue so that we can restart the master. Please notify us.

I emailed IT about this issue (multiple times), that maybe they should prevent users from overfloading the system, instead of waiting for it to happen and then clean up the mess (and leave me out of a job for 6 hours). However, they feel we should explain the usage of the cluster properly to new users, so that it wouldn't happen anyway. So maybe some words of advice are necessary ;-) Sofie Esther-Kristin Lather wrote:

If you want too you can crash/slow down the system with just about any script or program if you run enough copies at once or use it on big datasets. Just look at the list, it's nearly always something that works and then is scaled up to much. So you're equally guilty as the people that wrote the operating system imho. Any *nix based operating system has options available to limit what a user can do. So preventing this type of mess-ups is the server admins responsibility. However, you may want to think about what you're about to unleash to the cluster/midas and take into account some courtesy for your colleagues. Limiting the number of jobs in a queue, an issue that we have seen around several times since I discovered it a few months ago, is a simple setting. You can actually set the maximum number of jobs that can be queued, any jobs after that will simply be discarded. Or you can limit the number of jobs any user can queue. BTW, I fully agree with solan. It is a very good idea to give new cluster users a proper introduction on what you can and cannot do with the cluster. I was playing with the idea of writing a wiki entry on cluster-etiquette, but didn't do it because I left for Boston. If somebody start this, I would like to contribute. cheers, Thomas Sebastian Proost wrote:
