So, Stephen & me are going to try out Dommel for our internet... Have a look at : http://www.dommel.com/en/adsl/netconnect.php?cust=home --> 29€ for which you should get : * 0€ activation * 12 mbps max d/l speed (this is a maximum value, not a garantueed one, as always I suppose) * 200 gb d/l each month, with a 50% ratio between 1am and 1pm --> maximum 400 gb. * .be domain * and the coolest thing, click on "add-on features" : "boost pack : experience an unlimited (so no fup, as used by other isp's, but really unlimited) download, 4 simultanious pppoe passthrough sessions allowed : 6,00 euro/month and 9,95 euro activation fee" Taking the phone line for 5€, assuming you don't have one, you end up with 29+5+6 = 40€ if you want unlimited d/l, or 34€ for 200-400 gb, and 0+10 = 10€ activation. Too good to be true? I'll let you know... Hi, didn't Nicky Van Thuyne also have dommel? Maybe you can already ask 'm if it's too good to be true ;) -Kenny On Wed, 29 Jul 2009, Sofie Van Landeghem wrote:

Sounds great. Apparently very similar but slightly cheaper than the EDPnet I'm now using. To compare: -12 Mbps is indeed the maximum speed you can get with ADSL, unless you live really close to central (<1km). To compare: only with cable (Telenet) you can get up to 15 Mbps. I've read promises about a technical upper limit of 24Mbps, but living within a range of 1km to the central at Sint Pieters station, I think that's exaggerated. -200 GB ... damn, I'm 'only' getting 100 (but for now, even when downloading much, not getting there yet). Same night fee applies. -phone line for 5 EUR: are you getting this one from Bommel itself? I had a look around and I have to pay 13 EUR/month for the raw copper when ordering it from EDPnet itself, which I choose to just get one simple bill. Skynet (Belgacom) does it slightly cheaper (11 EUR/month)... and in the end EDPnet just sends someone from Belgacom to enable your line. So a line for 5 EUR seems really cheap. -Included is also a .be domain and unlimited mailboxes (according to fair use policy and plus 1 GB web storage). No activation cost if you have a 'friend' who makes you customer, 20 EUR if you don't have friends. So for EDPnet, I'm paying 42 EUR/month: 29 EUR for the subscription, 13 for the raw copper line. Seeing that these specs are rather close to the ones you describe, I don't think it's too good to be true. I'm only surprised about the phone line price, so that might be worth a switch for me if things haven't changed next year. Enjoy, and start downloading, T. -- ================================================================== Thomas Van Parys Tel:+32 (0)9 331 36 95 fax:+32 (0)9 3313809 VIB Department of Plant Systems Biology, Ghent University Technologiepark 927, 9052 Gent, BELGIUM thomas.vanparys@psb.vib-ugent.be http://bioinformatics.psb.ugent.be ==================================================================

We plan to start of with the 200 gb and see whether we ever reach the limit and get irritated. If so, we might go for the unlimited one :)

From the site : "no belgacom fixed line? promo now only *5,00* euro/month extra during the first 12 months (instead of 13,31 euro)" So yes, we are getting this from Bommel, we don't want or need a phone line from Belgacom. Make note that most of the prices are for the first 12 months only, but hey...

Seeing that their non-promo price is the same as what I'm paying now, it could quite possibly be the same. As said, I also thought I had ordered a phone line from EDPnet, but it was a Belgacom guy who came to connect it. Possibly Belgacom still has a monopoly on the actual copper line infrastructure? I think they do yes, but as long as I'm only paying for the actual copper and not for a telephone line with a new number etc, it's fine for me :) Sofie

They indeed just sell you a basic connection, no services attached. So... my conclusion is that I don't need to change to Bommel, until I see that my 100 GiB limit is insufficient. And if I need to download something after that, I first ask the girl with the 200 limit. Maybe only considering to get my copper line directly from Belgacom, as it's slightly cheaper... only I guess that'll be another hassle. There's is little information about this subject :/ But it seems fairly logical Belgacom (RTT) has set up all of the copperlines and is still maintaining them at this point. And to be honest, as phonelines are almost a necessity and a public service, it would be a shame if parts of the copperline network would fall 100% into the hands of the industry and was inaccessible for the Belgian gov. The state still owns 50,1% of all shares of Belgacom, so we're safe ;) Ah, the point is that dommel rents the phonelines.

I'm taking this back. Out of curiosity I just called EDPnet to measure out my connection. Apparently the connection has been that stable since the beginning of May that they're now upgrading my line to 20 Mbps. There's a chance this won't work, and then they're falling back to 15 Mbps, which still sounds nice. Hi, in the meanwhile I'm sharing someone's dommel subscription and i must say it's wonderful. I'm pretty surprised from the speeds i can manage to get. 2.5MB/s on bittorrent, that's more than I used to get when having telenet! But I am living less than 1km from the central access point, maybe I can get the maximum out of the line this way. Also, I'm on the 'no limit' account, so all Star Seasons, here I come ;) Kenny On Thu, 30 Jul 2009, Thomas Van Parys wrote:

Do you mean 2,5 Megabit (about 400 kilobyte a second) or really a whopping 2,5 Megabyte a second. If it's the second case I'm gonna call our landlord to convince him switch providers :) , that's more than I used to get when having telenet!
