[Binari] Any thoughts on this ?

I don't know whether or not they are allowed to take the bike, since this building is also property of VIB. But I have no idea who might know this...
Appearantly these guys can just drive into the underground parking- lot an grab some bikes. As there are no means to attach it it's completely pointless to use the second lock anyway.
This means working from home on Monday to pick it up, what is a lot less productive then working from the VIB. Guess that will "cost" the UGent more then what their charging me. Well done!

Didn't know you were driving one of those yellow UGent bikes. I'd be pretty pissed of as well... But I believe it's in the contract that you're obliged to always lock your bike onto something and use the wheel lock? I think they just want to enforce this behavior, but IMO they'd better use a less intrusive approach, eg. by attaching a warning to your bike, maybe charging a small fine to your account (they know who you are anyway), ... While I believe they indeed have the right to put 'their' bike in a safer place, it's indeed rather contra-productive (and I guess they'll have an agreement with VIB on this). This being said: you can always lock you're bike to the bike rack (those metal rings). I never leave my own bike anywhere without the frame tightly attached to something, even if I have to put my bike a street farther away (learned this lesson after locking only the wheel of my last bike... I still have the wheel...). T.

The difference is that those are all public areas, you actually have to pass two signs that say private area to get to the basement. And as you might have noticed if I leave my bike somewhere in a public area I've alway used both locks. They might as well ring a couple bells at my place and if anyone is kind enough to let them in grab all their bikes from the inner courtyard (no-one uses both locks in the privacy of their own building). Though then they also have an "agreement" with someone that they can enter the building, but without all involved parties knowing this, that's a pretty disgusting way use their policy against you. I think it's more comparable to not locking your bike, putting it in your own courtyard, but letting the door wide open, for everyone to walk in. Still private but easily accessible property (as the VIB garage is), but your/their bike not secured as they expect you to. Still I agree that it's terribly rude to just expect you to go by foot when you violate their rules, leaving you with the scare that your bike has been stolen and with the hassle to get it back. Have you asked David (or somebody else) from VIB whether they can do this on VIB property? I'm highly doubting this is legal. Fine, it's their bike, but that doesn't mean they can take it whenever... it's the same with my studio, it's not mine, but that doesn't give my landlady the right to come inside whenever she wants... Is there something about this in your contract? Sofie Sebastian.proost schreef:

Just wondering: is it UGent territory as well?

Concerning this: apparently on the Korenmarkt (right opposite the MacDonald's) there is a 'legal store', where you can get free legal advise, printouts of the rent law to bug your landlady with, etc... Here the law is very precise that she can't access your house while you're renting it.

I haven't read it, but I've been told that they state these kind of 'security rules' rather clearly. But Seppe still has the right to go piss in their letter box. T.

We can all go piss in the letter box! Well, it'll be a bit more difficult for us girls, but with some devotion so Seppe's cause... Sofie

Maybe someone should try to find out the licence plate of the van that picks up these bikes and report it to the police: " I saw this dubious looking van grabbing all these yellow bikes! So I did my civic duties and called it in " I think there's even a website for anonymous posting of offences: https://policeonweb.belgium.be hf! Kenny On Fri, 19 Jun 2009, Thomas Van Parys wrote:

Might be taking it a tad to far, no? Even Ghent City has it's own bike vans. They attach labels to old or abandoned looking bikes when they first pass by. When they find bikes with a label that hasn't been removed in a few weeks, they take them away as well. Hassle: yes. Theft: maybe, not really, you get it back. Useful: yes. Too many student's abandon their bike, leaving the carcass rotting in the street for months. So I wouldn't report a yellow UGent van rounding up yellow UGent bikes. T.
