So... some geeky stuff. I told some of you I really wanted one of those tiny laptops, without spending too much.. So in the end I got ... http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/index.php/taxid;2136212930;pid;5507;pt;1 For 300€ in the Macro, if anybody was wondering. You can get it with Linux as well (though probably not in the Macro), and then you will get a 20 GB hard drive, instead of 12 GB. Both versions should cost the same (300€), but they just put in more memory in the Linux one because they could save on licensing information. I wasn't aware of the Linux one when buying the Windows (XP) one, but don't really care, I still like to be able to open .doc and .excell properly :p (and I don't think running vmware is an option on this thing) Anyway... even though I only just got it, and haven't been able to play with it properly yet (away for the weekend), I've already fallen in love with it :-) From now on, it will probably travel with me whenever I go on a conference :-) End of message. Oow... it's nice and shiny and white and maccy-like! Beware though, it got a bad review concerning a (sometimes) sticky touchpad... wonder what the reviewer was using it for.

You could have bought the linux one and installed the Windows XP pro licensed by UGent :-) And it could be that VirtualBox (by Sun) is somewhat lighter (and easier) to run a virtual machine than vmware is (and it's free: http://www.virtualbox.org/). It's not suitable for exporting/sharing vm's yet. And I have to say that both OpenOffice and recently KOffice have come to a point where they do open and save MS formats quite nicely (although I'm not sure yet about the new .docx format). (btw. for Kenny: I installed Fedora 10 from the live CD this weekend in no time, without any hassle... just plug 'n play... some nice improvements on the packaging front. And all additional software is now found in two repos: rpmfusion-free and rpmfusion-nonfree. Very useful.)

You must really be fond of your new toy if the first thing you wanted to do was tell us all about it. I'm assuming you send this email with it? enjoy, T. -- ================================================================== Thomas Van Parys Tel:+32 (0)9 331 36 95 fax:+32 (0)9 3313809 VIB Department of Plant Systems Biology, Ghent University Technologiepark 927, 9052 Gent, BELGIUM thomas.vanparys@psb.ugent.be http://bioinformatics.psb.ugent.be ==================================================================
