[Binari] Merchandising

Did you guys know UGent has some new merchandising? There's actually some cool stuff in their boutique :-) For the American college style student: http://www.unigear.eu/shop/productinfo?var=0&Product=Casual+Sweater+Ghent+University&shop=gent http://www.unigear.eu/shop/productinfo?var=0&Product=Cap+Ghent+University&shop=gent For the sophisticated student: http://www.unigear.eu/shop/productinfo?var=0&Product=Golfballen+UGent&shop=gent For the really young student: http://www.unigear.eu/shop/productinfo?var=0&Product=Slabbetje+Universiteit+Gent&shop=gent And some helpful stuff for the next VIB party: http://www.unigear.eu/shop/products/?a=1&headgroup=Wijngeschenken&Shop=gent T. -- ================================================================== Thomas Van Parys Tel:+32 (0)9 331 36 95 fax:+32 (0)9 3313809 VIB Department of Plant Systems Biology, Ghent University Technologiepark 927, 9052 Gent, BELGIUM thomas.vanparys@psb.ugent.be http://bioinformatics.psb.ugent.be ==================================================================

I really wonder who would buy this stuff... I mean, a student who is seen by other students wearing a sweat-shirt of UGent, will most likely be the target of some mockery... We're no americans here, going to the Ghent university does not really cary a lot of prestige with it. Michiel Thomas Van Parys wrote:

I'd walk around in a sweat-shirt of the uni ;D Probably because west-flanders doesn't have a university, we are more prone to these status messages .. And the fact they actually havethe USA type makes it even more 'filmish'. I'd go for filmish -Kenny On Fri, 27 Jun 2008, Michiel Van Bel wrote:

Not totally sure about that. Indeed, we're not that close to our university as Americans seem to be (at least in the movies), but I have a feeling that this is changing slightly. UGent has done some nice attempts to have a cool image and there's enough "we are better" feelings toward Leuven and Brussels to make some students want to show of with the fact that they're in Ghent. At least I know of some who just discovered the new sweater line and are thinking about buying one. I'd settle for the stylish USB stick :-) T.

Bests, Seb
To be honest ... exactly why is the UGent following this American/English tradition? Yeah, there will be more of an identification with the university (perhaps), but I really am not in favor of such nonsensical stuff. Although I do agree with seb about the cheerleaders (which we must save, in order to save the world). -- ================================================================== Michiel Van Bel PhD student Tel:+32 (0)9 331 36 95 fax:+32 (0)9 3313809 VIB Department of Plant Systems Biology, Ghent University Technologiepark 927, 9052 Gent, BELGIUM mibel@psb.ugent.be http://www.psb.ugent.be ==================================================================

I'm also not quite sure about the toga idea. It indeed feels like trying to be too American, and a bit like 'starting a tradition just for the fun of it'. But does anybody know if this is really just an American tradition or rather an older European tradition that's reinstated? Our professors walk around the city in toga every year at Dies Natalis. At Oxford, I believe, the opening of the academic year has also a procession of professors in toga. What about the students?
