Hi binaries, My tex editor is not working (Texmaker TeX editor). Whatever I try for compiling, it says 'could not start command'. I installed it just with sudo yum install. Is it because I needed to install other stuff on which this will depend? I also can give something away for a reduced price. I still have three sloffen of Marlboro light cigarettes with a value of 132 euro. Who wants to pay more than 90 euro for it? cheers, Ward

did you install the tex-environment itself (latex, pdftext, etc... executables) ? Or perhaps you need to change the location of the tex-directory in some configuration file of that tex-editor. Ward Blondé wrote:

Or maybe you have to tell your editor which command to execute when hitting the button? Preferably 'pdflatex'... maybe with some parameters. Start by just typing 'pdflatex' on your commandline to see if it's installed and in your path.

Hmm. Typing pdflatex on the commandline returns 'command not found'. I remember I just typed 'yum search latex' and then 'sudo yum install texmaker.i386'. That gives me a nice editor but probably not the environment. As I have no root access, I can't use the nice Add/Remove software button on my pc. Maybe I should bug them with it. Or do you think I can do it with my sudo-rights? thanks, Ward Thomas Van Parys wrote:

Apparently you have sudo rights on yum... to know for sure, enter 'sudo -l' ... it'll list your permissions.
So if the thing wants you to run it as root, then do so ... do "sudo yum list tetex" ... or "sudo yum list *tex*" in case RedHat uses other Tex packages...
If this doesn't work, ask IT...

If you could install texmaker, you can install latex as well.
On my Fedora machine, I apparently have these packages:
tetex.i386 tetex-dvips.i386 tetex-fonts.i386 tetex-latex.i386 texinfo.i386 texinfo-tex.i386
probable just "sudo yum install tetex" will install the stuff you need.
And I like using Kile (KDE tex-editor) as editor.

Isn't there some linux-variant of the PATH-variable in windows, and shouldn't it point to the installation file of his tex-install? Kenny Billiau wrote:
maybe you try to find out what package would give you pdflatex
sudo yum whatprovides pdflatex
should do the trick.
The question remains if you still need pdflatex tho ;)

ow .. yeah .. if a program is nopt in your path, you can still check where it resides by executing: whereis pdflatex and then invoking the command with the full path. On Thu, 25 Sep 2008, Michiel Van Bel wrote:

Yes, and it's called PATH. But most of the time /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin are already in your PATH and most packages make sure at least a softlink to the command is placed in one of them. T.

Ward, I gave you a list of the installed packages on my computer. Did you install them all? The file 'pdflatex' is in one of them, and I'll give you a hint: it's NOT in tetex.i386 'man yum' or 'man rpm' both give you tons of ways to solve this riddle. T.

sudo yum install latex returns me: No package latex available. Nothing to do So how do I find the name of the correct software to install? Ward Thomas Van Parys wrote:

Start by just typing 'pdflatex' on your commandline to see if it's installed and in your path.

Smoking is bad for you, my friend. But you're welcome to sell it on eBay and buy a computer game for me with the money.
