Dear users, Just two things that should be sorted out: 1. There's less entries in the logs then there are reservations (especially with regards to the 710). So please, fill it in after each use so the next user knows what's running and what needs to cool and we have an idea about the usage and problems. 2. Every problem should be reported no matter how small it is i.e. problems in the start up of the system should be reported irregardless of whether you are able to resolve the problem during your session by restarting everything. With problems we mean both hardware and software problems (yes even Windows). [Confocal] 710 problem

Hi confocals, the 710 PC had a problem starting, and it repeatedly froze on the CTRL+ALT+DEL login screen. The IT have now restored the system from a 14d old backup and it seems to work OK. [Confocal] VIB image library

Dear all, The VIB imaging core has created an image library for people to use as an image archive for many purposes (see flyer attached). If you have stunning microscopic images which you have not (and will not) publish, feel free to send them to Saskia or Chris (bioimaging.gent(a)VIB.be or saskia.lippens(a)dmbr.vib-UGent.be) so that they can be included into this library. Please also add 1 line of text describing the image on display. Contributers will be acknowledged for these images when they are used and there are prizes foreseen for the top images submitted. [Confocal] only use MQ water for water corrected lenses

Dear all, This evening, there was again a black-capped bottle of water with a pipet in it standing next to the Zeiss CLSM confocal, strongly suggesting that somebody used this water as immersion for the 63x lens. The bottle with MQ was standing alongside and empty, so somebody apparently found it too much of a burden to go to the stockroom at the end of the corridor to get new MQ water. *Only MQ water from the small machine in the stock room can be used on the water corrected lenses. *I therefore ask you once more to act responsibly and take care of our lenses, they are the most valuable asset of any microscope and their purity will determine to a large extend the quality of your pictures. [Confocal] Zeiss exciter Argon laser broken

Dear all, The Argon laser of the Zeiss Exciter is broken as it will not ignite anymore. I will contact Zeiss and get it replaced. Please take into account that you cannot image with the 488, 458 or 514nm laser until it is replaced. I will inform you when it will be operational again. Also, I just heard that the red control diode monitoring the output of the laser on the Exciter has been broken for some months without me knowing about it. The red control diode is essential to monitor the laser output and to guarantee a long lifetime of the laser. Going into the red equals driving a car at 6000rpm. It will last a while, but not very long. In the future, please inform me of any malfunction on any of the microscopes the moment you encounter it. It is very well possible that we killed the laser prematurely due to the malfunction of this diode, which is really stupid. [Confocal] Argon lasers on July 15th

Dear all, As there will be a power cut on Monday July 15th from 6-10 am, please make sure all Argon lasers of all 5 confocals are switched off at least by Sunday night on the 14th of July. Without cooling due to lack of power, we risk to have several Argon lasers damaged or broken if they are on when the power is cut.
