Calendar Name: seminars Scheduled for: Thursday, September 22 2011, 11:00 - 12:30 Event text: Prof Tom Beeckman VIB, Dept. of Plant Systems Biology Ghent University Gent BELGIUM Details: "Root branching controlled by the tips" ABSTRACT In the root, branching, i.e. de novo organogenesis or formation of lateral roots, is known to occur outside the apical meristem in a distinct monolayer of cells, designated as the pericycle. Not every pericycle cell becomes implicated into lateral root formation and it has been proposed that an auxin-dependent signaling mechanism will result in the specification of some cells as �founder cells�. Founder cell specification is not a continuous process but presents an oscillatory appearance that is proposed to be determinative for the longitudinal spacing of lateral roots along the primary root. However, the molecular mechanisms driving the periodical specification of founder cells remain largely elusive. Through a targeted transcript profiling approach, the Root Development group in Gent (Belgium) has obtained new insights into this very early step of lateral root formation. Our results support a hypothesis in which multiple tissue-specific successive auxin signaling modules are involved during the entire process of lateral root formation. The earliest auxin signaling module is situated in the root apex in proximity of the root apical meristem. Furthermore, a chemical compound screening unmasked the importance of precursor-to-auxin conversion activities in the very root tip. In summary, the root tip is a crucial activity centre that has a decisive role on the way roots colonize the surrounding soil.

Symposium 7 Oct 2011: Sustainable agriculture for an innovative economy – an opportunity for Brazil and Belgium 7 Oct 2011 – Ghent, Belgium In Brazil, biotechnology is rapidly changing the face of the economy. From agriculture and biofuels to green chemistry, the country is leading the way in public-private partnerships in agricultural research and deployment of new products. On the other side of the world, Belgium has built an impressive track record of pioneering fundamental plant science. Belgian plant scientists are generating frontline knowledge that can form the basis of many innovations in sustainable agriculture and industry. The Institute of Plant Biotechnology for Developing Countries (IPBO), is organizing a symposium about cooperation between Belgium and Brazil in biotech. Aim is to foster the translation of fundamental plant science research into innovative applications for agriculture, cleaner chemical industry and mitigation of environmental impacts in both countries. Representatives from research organizations and companies from both countries will present case studies and opportunities for collaboration in biotech. The symposium is organized at the occasion of the launch of <http://www.europalia.be/brasil/?lang=en> Europalia.Brazil and a FWO and FRS-F.N.R.S. <http://www.science-belgium-brazil.be/> joint workshopon science cooperation between Belgium and Brazil. However, successful pathogens, such as the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst) strain DC3000, have developed specific virulence factors to overcome host immunity and cause diseases. During infection, Pst DC3000 produces several virulence factors to engage multiple host cell types and diverse host physical and chemical barriers. The bacterial type III secretion system (T3SS) delivers a battery of virulence "effector proteins" directly into the host cell. The phytotoxin coronatine mimics the plant hormone jasmonate. Study of the molecular action of effector proteins and coronatine highlights the utility of bacterial pathogenesis as a powerful probe of plant immunity, jasmonate signaling, cell biology, and stomatal guard cell signaling.
