Although large numbers of clinical studies aiming at microbiome-based disease markers are currently being performed, our basic knowledge about the normal variability of the human intestinal microbiota and the factors that determine this still remain limited. Here, I will present a large-scale study of the gut microbiome variation in a geographically confined region (Flanders, Belgium). A cohort of >5000 individuals from the normal population is sampled for microbiome analysis and extensive metadata covering demographic, health- and lifestyle-related parameters is collected. Based on this cohort, a large-scale cross-sectional study of microbiome variability in relation to health as well as parameters associated to microbiome composition is being performed. In this presentation, I will discuss our experiences in large-scale microbiome monitoring, show how the development of dedicated computational approaches can assist in microbiome analysis and interpretation, and first results coming out of this effort. Dear all We are very pleased to announce that between the 21st and 24th of November 2016, we will be hosting the 'Plant Omics and Biotechnology for Human Health (POBHH)' Conference in Gent, within the framework of the Phytochemical Society of Europe. The PSE originated as the Plant Phenolics Group in Cambridge, UK in 1957 and serves those with an interest in the chemistry and biochemistry of plants and in the applications of such knowledge in industry and agriculture. More information can be found at http://phytochemicalsociety.org. Through this meeting we wish to launch a platform to bring together European and International labs working on plant metabolites with nutraceutical and pharmaceutical properties that benefit human health. The meeting aims to provide a forum to present the latest developments in the fields of functional genomics for plant metabolism, metabolic engineering in plants, synthetic biology for plant-derived chemicals, and challenges faced in plant omics and biotechnology. Conference 0n Molecular Farming in Gent 25-27 May 2016

Dear Colleague, We are very glad to share with you that on the 25th till the 27th of May 2016, we will be hosting the second conference of the International Society for Plant Molecular Farming at the VIB/UGent Department of Plant Systems Biology in Ghent, Belgium. The International Society for Plant Molecular Farming is the only society of its kind composed of members interested in using plant-based biotechnology for the production of high-value proteins for human and animal health (like vaccines and antibodies), as well as industrial applications. The Society has budded out of the previous large European COST actions on Molecular Farming and is now composed of members representing over 29 countries from the five continents. The conference aims to provide a forum for young and established investigators to share experience and present their latest results in the field of molecular farming . The conference will be held at the "Fiers-Schell Van Montagu"-building, Gent, Belgium and is open to all scientists, however participation will be limited to the first 200 registrants.
