The evolution of plant roots shaped the terrestrial landscape and underpinned the radiation of land plants. The aim of the talk is to provide an overview of the origin and early diversification of plant roots. Fossils provide a unique window into early root evolution and it is only by combing evidence from the fossil record with the diversity of living rooting systems that we can piece together the evolution of plant roots over their 400 million year history.
