Structural Bioinformatician (M/F) – Postdoc position – 3 years

The 3D structure-function group, within the department of Biochemistry at the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (Maastricht University), a small and newly started unit, is seeking a Structural Bioinformatician to start in October 2007 or shortly thereafter.

The group has a broad interest in the structure-function studies of coagulation proteins that are involved is homeostasis as well as in many pathological conditions such as thromboembolism and bleeding. Central to the research is the information exchange between experimental (i.e. basic biochemical/molecular biology/peptide chemistry/surface plasmon resonance) and computational approaches (docking/molecular modeling/virtual ligand screening) such that new information on the function of these essential proteins can be obtained, which ultimately will lead to improved treatment regimes, diagnostics as well as novel therapeutics in the cardiovascular field.

The ideal candidate will have a background in de biological, biochemical or medical sciences with a strong track record in computer science and will be experienced in the use of molecular modeling packages, docking approaches and virtual ligand screening in both a WINDOWS and a LINUX environment.

You will be responsible for the generation, processing, analysis and storage of data generated, for system maintenance and drive the development of new approaches to the common research objectives. You will be a team player, with good social skills working in collaboration with Dr. Nicolaes as well as with a PhD student. Our group has a close collaboration with the group of Dr. B. Villoutreix (INSERM U648, Paris, France) in the field of structural bioinformatics. Occasionally, depending on the results, your skills and interests, your assistance in ‘wet biochemical experimentation’ will be called upon.

A major focus of the research project is to identify and characterize new small compounds that are directed against selected coagulation proteins and that may be used as tools by the in vitro experimentalists, as well as serve as starting compounds for the development of novel pro- or anticoagulant drugs.

Salary will be on approximately the University Grade 11-0, (depending on skills and experience, gross salary of ~ € 40,000, resulting in a net monthly salary of ~ 2000) + a maximum of € 4000 moving Allowance.

An evaluation will be made after 1 year and upon positive outcome of the evaluation, the position will be extended for another 2 years.

You may send a CV, with the names and addresses of two referees and a covering letter to Dr. G. Nicolaes, Department of Biochemistry, Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht, Universiteitssingel 50, 6229 ER, Maastricht, the Netherlands.
