Dear all,

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic PhD candidate in a joint project titled "From sequence to phenotype: detecting deleterious variation by prediction of functionality". This project is implemented together with the Animal Breeding & Genomics Centre of Wageningen UR, and is part of the STW Breed4Food partnership program. It aims to develop and experimentally validate novel computational methods to identify potentially deleterious variants in livestock species, specifically pig and poultry. Such methods will not only provide insight into the genetic makeup of populations of these species, but will also provide new genomics tools to breeders to improve genetic breeding stock, as detection of such deleterious variations will allow their subsequent removal from the population.

We are looking for an ambitious PhD candidate with an MSc degree in bioinformatics, systems biology or computer science (with a demonstrable affinity for biology). We are specifically seeking candidates with a strong background in machine learning and genetics. You will be based in both Delft and Wageningen, and work in close cooperation with other PhD candidates and researchers in the STW Breed4Food partnership program.

More information about the position, the research groups involved, and a possibility to apply for this position can be found at https://www.academictransfer.com/employer/WUR/vacancy/29649/lang/en/. For more information on the STW Breed4Food partnership programme, see http://www.wageningenur.nl/en/Jobs/Innovations-in-animal-breeding-and-genomics-vacancies-for-8-PhD-candidates-and-2-postdocs.htm.

Interested candidates can apply up to September 16, 2015 through the above-mentioned website.

Best regards,

Prof. Marcel Reinders, Delft Bioinformatics Lab, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands
Prof. Dick de Ridder, Bioinformatics Group, Wageningen University, The Netherlands
