Junior group leader in artificial intelligence for oncology

The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) is an independent comprehensive cancer center located in the lively city of Amsterdam combining a research institute (NKI) and the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek cancer hospital (AVL) under one roof. The NKI focuses on five research themes: molecular oncology, precision medicine, immunotherapy, survivorship and image guided therapy. All these themes have a strong interest in exploiting the power of AI.

We therefore seek outstanding individuals who wish to explore research challenges in oncology through artificial intelligence by employing large collections of medical and research data available at the institute.

AI infrastructure
The NKI hosts large and diverse collections of medical data from radiology, (molecular) pathology, radiation oncology and quality of life, both from clinical trials and routine treatments. Efficient methods for data retrieval and consent have been established. Various research groups in these disciplines seek active collaboration with an AI expert for biomarker research, automation and prediction. In addition, we expect the successful candidate to develop novel AI methodologies and provide leadership in the application thereof. High performance computing capacity is available both within the institute as well as through a collaboration with the national center for supercomputing

Inspiring international atmosphere
Approximately 650 researchers are employed in the research laboratories. All of our research meetings are in English and a large number of international post-docs, students and staff members contribute to the open, collaborative atmosphere of the institute. Our cancer hospital treats about 40,000 patients annually and provides excellent opportunities for translational research and implementation of technological innovations.

Inviting conditions
Conveniently located in the vibrant city of Amsterdam, we provide a stimulating and interactive research environment, use of all state-of-the-art facilities, and a competitive package to start a research group. This includes your own salary, salary for one additional position and, when external funding is not obtained yet, financial support for two additional positions. Junior group leaders will be offered a 5 year appointment. After 4 years they will be evaluated for a tenured position.
