It intends to update them about the most recent developments in the diverse branches of computer science and its neighbouring areas. To that purpose, renowned scholars will lecture and will be available for interaction with the audience. SSTiC 2014 will cover the whole spectrum of computer science through 6 keynote lectures and 24 six-hour courses dealing with some of the most lively topics in the field. The organizers share the idea that outstanding speakers will really attract the brightest students. ADDRESSED TO: Graduate students from around the world. There are no formal pre-requisites in terms of the academic degree the attendee must hold. However, since there will be several levels among the courses, reference may be made to specific knowledge background in the description of some of them. SSTiC 2014 is also appropriate for more senior people who want to keep themselves updated on developments in their own field or in other branches of computer science. Hi all, as you may know the BiGCaT group in Maastricht collaborates with others in the USA NRNB consortium on WikiPathways, PathVisio, and BridgeDb. This National Resource for Network Biology (NRNB) was accepted into our 8th year of Google Summer of Code! It will be mentoring Cytoscape, WikiPathways, PathVisio, MedSavant, Virtual Cell, and other network-related projects. The GSoC funds students to work on Open Source bioinformatics tools (in fact, NRNB is just one of the bioinformatics mentoring organizations) during the summer holidays. The next week or two is the time for students to show there interest and hook up with the developers to work out a project plan they will submit and hope to get accepted (e.g. mashups to other BeNeLux bioinformatics tools with Cytoscape, PathVisio, etc!). http://nrnb.org/gsoc/ On this page is also provided a long list of project ideas, though students can come up with new ideas too: http://nrnb.org/gsoc/ideas2.html Students should keep in mind that this is a particularly active time for our developer communities, so please be patient with the uptick in GSoC-related questions and newbie introductions on these mailing lists over the next few weeks, though. Post-doctoral position in perinatal and maternal epidemiology at McMaster University Health Sciences A post-doctoral position is available immediately in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMaster University Health Sciences/Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, to work on analytic methodology and advanced issues in systematic review/meta-analytic methodology in the field of perinatal and maternal epidemiology to improve the health of women and infants. The successful candidate will be co-supervised by Dr. Sarah McDonald, a perinatal clinical epidemiologist and high risk obstetrician and Dr Joseph Beyene, an academic biostatistician and methodologist. Work will involve development and application of advanced analytic techniques using large perinatal data sets, examining both maternal and infant outcomes. Opportunities include collaborations with teams in other departments, centres and provinces. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Clinical Epidemiology, (Bio)Statistics, Bioinformatics, Psychology, or a related field. Excellent programming (SAS/R) and communication skills are required. The applicant should be enthusiastic and comfortable working with real as well as simulated data and must be able to work independently. Experience in clinical epidemiology or perinatology would be an asset. The appointment will be for two years, with possible extension. Salary is commensurate with qualifications. The post-holder will be working closely with scientific staff to evaluate, develop, test and validate new algorithms and bioinformatics tools to assist in the interpretation of microRNAs and DNA variants and the provision of bioinformatics training for staff within the department. The Comparative Genomics group of Martijn Huynen (CMBI, Radboud University Medical Centre, Nijmegen) has a position for a talented and motivated scientist to do bioinformatics research into unraveling the patterns behind intellectual disability. We have compiled a catalogue of more than 600 genes, mutations in which give rise to intellectual disability. Several of these genes have already been demonstrated to act together in molecular pathways. However, a global overview of the biological coherence underlying intellectual disability genes is missing and the link between molecular pathways and the various intellectual disability phenotypes has not been established. The challenge is to address this, e.g. via analyzing protein-protein interactions, tissues specific gene expression, shared phenotypes in human and model organisms, shared evolutionary origin and sharing of transcription factor binding sites. Your work will shed light onto genetic design principles that underlie human brain function and will identify new candidate genes for intellectual disability by Bayesian integration of genomics data. The project combines the expertise of the Huynen group in the analysis of genomics data to predict protein function with the expertise in studying genetic disease of the group of Annette Schenck (Genetics Department Radboud University Medical Centre). This collaboration ensures direct experimental testing of interesting newly predicted candidate proteins and pathways. The position is initially for 1.3 years with possibilities for extension. Starting date: as soon as possible. Requirements: You have a PhD in Bioinformatics or in Natural Sciences with a published affinity for large-scale comparative analyses of genomics data coupled to in depth study of biological systems.
