POSTDOC IN COMPUTATIONAL CANCER BIOLOGY PREDICTING CHEMOTHERAPY RESPONSE IN LUMINAL BREAST CANCER Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is widely used in all subtypes of breast cancers. However, only a small subset (~10%) of patients with luminal breast cancer achieve pathological complete response. We previously identified genes of which expression levels are associated to chemotherapy resistance. In this project, we aim to i) better understand the molecular alterations of luminal breast cancers (e.g. role of the genes identified, association with BRCAness); ii) develop practical routine predictive tests to tailor neoadjuvant chemotherapy for luminal breast cancer. To do that, we will leverage in-house (DNA and RNA sequencing data from 500 biopsies) and published data (METABRIC, TCGA) on primary luminal breast cancer together with a large collection of cell lines available via our collaboration with the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the Cancer Systems Biology Centre at NKI. The successful candidate will be in charge of building computational models with the aim of delivering new biomarkers used for the clinical treatment of luminal breast cancer. The Van de Peer lab (http://bioinformatics.psb.ugent.be/beg/) is setting up a joint lab in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology at the University of Pretoria (http://web.up.ac.za) Recently, the University of Pretoria founded a new Genomics Research Center, focusing on five major themes, namely Microbial and Environmental Genomics, Plant Genomics, Fungal Genomics, Animal and protozoon genomics, and Human Genomics. To support research in these respective fields, we are setting up a new Bioinformatics and Systems Biology research group at the University of Pretoria, which will be closely interconnected with the Bioinformatics group at Ghent University. In this respect, we are currently looking for 3 Postdoctoral Fellows (to be working in Pretoria). We seek creative, skilled and highly motivated candidates with a PhD in bioinformatics or computational biology. Candidates with a PhD in (molecular) biology, genetics or computer science will also be considered, if they have proven expertise in bioinformatics. We do require strong analytical, computational skills proven by an excellent publication record. Experience with next generation sequence and whole genome sequence data is also required. Applicants should be proficient in programming (Perl, Python, C++ or Java) and knowledge in statistics and/or mathematical modeling would be an asset. Good communication skills are essential and applicants should be proficient in English, both speaking and writing. The hired postdoctoral fellows will work in a highly international environment. The projects will primarily be related to stem cell and cancer related research, with a special attention to focus on perturbation in network biology induced by gene mutations and small molecule drugs. We expect the candidate to be experienced in relevant bioinformatics tools such as Cytoscape, PathVisio (or other pathway analysis tools) and [R]. Also a strong background in bio-statistics and programming (e.g. in Java, Perl, Python) is an advantage. Ideally also experience with MS-based proteomics data is available. Post-doc in Machine Learning for Cancer Research at Louvain University

The ICTEAM Research Institute (www.uclouvain.be/en-icteam.html) of the University of Louvain has an open post-doc position for a joint project with the de Duve Institute (www.deduveinstitute.be) This inter-disciplinary project gathers machine learning and cancer research experts. The position is open for a one-year renewable term. This research project aims at identifying and characterizing biomarkers for predicting the response to treatment of acute or chronic myeloid leukemia. Biomarker identification will rely on multivariate selection techniques from gene expression data (microarrays, RNAseq) and functional annotations. Such annotations should promote a robust marker identification and should ease the further validation in a theranostic setting. Marker selection could be further influenced by complementary data including microRNAs, SNPs, ... >From a machine learning viewpoint, key aspects of this project include: feature selection, sparsity, high-dimensional and heterogeneous data, and, possibly, multi-task learning, bayesian learning, metric learning, graphical models, network inference, ... The candidate should have a PhD degree in computer science, applied mathematics or statistics with a strong focus on machine learning (and/or related topics including optimization, signal processing, statistical modeling, ...). Fluency in R is recommended. Familiarity with biostatistics or machine learning applications to biomedical research would be an added advantage. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and have a track record of publications in leading international venues. S/he should have good communication skills in English and an open, proactive personality to work in a collaborative project with medical experts.
