As researchers of very related topics in neighboring regions we are excited to widen our perspectives by creating the opportunity to discuss methods, tools, challenges and successes with people of similar mindset. To vitalize the communication amongst researchers from the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, there will be three independent conferences held in Maastricht, Aachen and Liège. Successful Planning of Large Data Generating Experiments - Leuven, 16 March 2016 Since recent years, biologists are joining the big-data club. Due to the strong growth of high-throughput Omics technologies, life scientists are under the continuous pressure to deal with massive data sets, encountering challenges when having to handle, process and move data. This workshop is organized with the aim of providing a proper foundation once planning large data generating experiments. With the focus of giving practical recommendations and valuable tips and tricks, the following areas will be covered during the workshop. * Think before you start * Know your experiment: profile the method/instrument for typical error sizes (biological, technical), consistency of performance, ... * Suitable Experimental design: randomization, sample size, power analysis, ... * Data Types and post-acquisition quality control * Organizing effective collaborations between wet-lab and dry-lab biologists for setting up a data analysis strategy and pipeline * Are there existing datasets available that can be used to answer your questions. Extended abstract deadline is January 25, 2016! Dear colleague, The first edition of the two day event 'Applied Bioinformatics in Life Sciences' ( http://www.vibconferences.be/event/applied-bioinformatics-in-life-sciences ) organized by the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology (VIB), will take place on March 17-18, 2016 in Leuven, Belgium. Present your research with a poster or talk You can showcase your own research to the international research community during the poster sessions at the conference. The best abstracts will be selected to give a presentation as well. The extended deadline for the abstract submission is January 25, 2016. You can upload your abstract on the conferences website. In the last week of January you will receive an email concerning your acceptation. All accepted abstracts will be included in the program book. Dear may I ask to spread this vacancy in your network: we are urgently looking to fill a Postdoc position for a Computational Scientists at the VIB department of Plant Systems Biology in Ghent, Belgium. The project focuses on RNA-seq analysis of maize and integration of these data with multiple data sources (e.g. genomics, phenotyping, metabolomics, other transcriptomics). In this project we study the regulation of plant growth in relation to the environment, in particular drought. The majority of the data are produced in house by the group of Dirk Inzé and the selected candidate will work closely with the experimental team. GATK Best Practices for Variant Discovery workshop 14-15 April 2016

Dear all, I am very happy to announce that, after the success of the GATK workshop last year, Edinburgh Genomics again has been able to get a 3-person-strong team from the Broad Institute in Boston over to Edinburgh to deliver a two-day workshop on 14 and 15 April 2016. This workshop will focus on the core steps involved in calling variants with the Broad’s Genome Analysis Toolkit ( https://www.broadinstitute.org/gatk/) using the “Best Practices” developed by the GATK team. The workshop is composed of one day of lectures (including many opportunities for Q&A) and one optional day of hands-on training. Dear all, We are offering a 6-months master student internship at the European Institute for Systems Biology and Medicine (EISBM) in Lyon,France, as part of the exploitation of the data generated during the U-BIOPRED severe asthma research project. The position will allow an intern to participate in the legacy of a state-of-the-art EU Systems Medicine project and the work conducted during the internship will lead to the publication of at least one high-level scientific article. We are looking for a master student with R and Bioconductor programming skills, a good background in biostatistics and good English level.
