Dear all, We are very pleased to invite submissions for talks at the third RSG Belgium seminar. It will take place in Brussels on Wednesday, the 28th of May 2014 from 14h to 17h. We will be accepting the first four submitted talks for this session. So don't wait too long to submit. The featured talks will have 20 minutes to present followed by about 10 minutes of questions. Regulatory genomics is the topic of much research activity worldwide. Since computational methods are important in the study of gene regulation, the RegGenSIG meeting focuses on bioinformatics for regulatory genomics. An important goal of the meeting is to foster a collaborative community wherein scientists convene to solve difficult research problems in all areas of computational regulatory genomics. RegGenSIG will include presentations and posters that cover the broad spectrum of topics important to regulatory genomics research. The goal is to bring together experts in experimental methods and computational methods to consider sequence-based reconstruction of regulatory networks and prediction of gene expression. Topics to be addressed in the SIG include the following: inference of gene regulatory networks; utilization of information pertaining to epigenetics, chromatin structure, and histone modifications; determination of the roles of regulatory RNAs; prediction of transcriptional regulation from RNA-seq data and ChIP-seq data; pattern discovery in sequences; and sequence based modeling of gene expression. CALL FOR EXTENDED ABSTRACTS To make an oral presentation at RegGenSIG, extended abstracts should be submitted by April 27, 2014 to sinhas(a)illinois.edu, including "RegGen Abstract Oral" in the subject line. Dear, Ph.D. students from VIB, Belgium, are organizing the “VIBes in Biosciences 2014” symposium which aims to bring together Ph.D. candidates from different areas in life sciences. This symposium is organized to stimulate networking, listen to renowned speakers, including a Nobel laureate, and transfer skills through workshops. The symposium will take place *from* *17 to 19 September 2014* in the Horta venue in *Antwerp, Belgium.* The symposium offers an exciting scientific program with topics that concern every doctoral student. Experience in working with Genotyping by Sequencing data would be advantageous. The ideal candidate will also have some experience or an interest in integrating multi-faceted 'omics data to understand underlying systems and biological networks. This is a senior and permanent position. The successful applicant will have a PhD or high level postgraduate qualification in Bioinformatics (or related field) with at least five years of related work experience. A thorough knowledge of Unix, scripting language (Perl/Python or similar) and an understanding of biological databases along with various Bioinformatics tools is required. This is a highly collaborative role, where the incumbent will be working alongside scientists on a regular basis thus requiring a good knowledge of Genetics and Molecular Biology. Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively articulate complex, technical information to the clients is highly desirable. Other requirements are good organisational abilities along with excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills. The position will be based at our Grasslands campus in Palmerston North and will be part of the wider Bioinformatics and Statistics team.
