In the context of its recently initiated priority theme, "Earth and Life Sciences", Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) invites applications for the position of a *post-doctoral position* (two years, with possible extension). CWI is the national research institute for mathematics and computer science in the Netherlands. CWI performs frontier research in mathematics and computer science and transfers new knowledge in these fields to society in general and trade and industry in particular. The opening is a research position within the field of *computational biology*. The candidate will contribute to the development of algorithmic and statistical methods for problems involving biological networks. These include network alignment, comparison, and query problems as well as subnetwork identification problems that require the integration of additional data, like gene expression or survival data. A large part of the work will be the application of these methods to biologically or medically relevant problems such as the identification of functional modules in protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks by means of detecting jointly differentially expressed network regions. The ideal candidate * has excellent knowledge of the underlying biological mechanisms * is able to turn his or her knowledge into software tools * has experience with or is willing to learn aspects of discrete optimization, algorithmics, and statistics The candidate is expected to have a demonstrated record of excellent research and to be able to carry out his own research agenda and to collaborate with colleagues at CWI and other institutions. Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the “CAO-onderzoekinstellingen” and based on qualifications. Many thanks! kind regards, marie-france --- The main objective of the postdoc is to develop co-cladogenesis inference methods in order to better understand how tight is the association between symbionts, more specifically endosymbionts, and their hosts. Some of the questions we wish to address are, how often are symbionts horizontally transferred to other branches of the host phylogenetic tree, how long do parasites persist inside their host following the invasion of a new lineage, and what processes underlie this dynamic gain/loss equilibrium? To address the questions stated above using sequence data, island arthropod communities, namely from Huahine, Raiatea, Moorea and Tahiti in French Polynesia, will be examined as these allow to establish recent patterns of loss and gain of infections. This work will be conducted in the BAOBAB-BAMBOO teams of, resp., the Lab. de Biometrie et Biologie Evolutive (Univ. Lyon 1), and of the INRIA, France, in very close collaboration with the "Evolutionary genetic of host-parasite interactions" team at the LBBE, more particularly with Sylvain Charlat (CR1, CNRS) and a co-supervised PhD student. The postdoc is part of a vaster ANR-Blanc project on the combinatorial exploration of the molecular landscape and evolution of intimate species relations. The position is for one year renewable once and must start no later than December 2008. The candidate is expected to have a solid training in mathematics (combinatorics, possibly also statistics) and either an initial background or strong interest in biology. Next week, from September 1st to September 5th, the VIB Department for Plant Systems Biology, Technologiepark 927, 9052 Ghent, Belgium, will host a one-week summer school on mathematical and computational modeling for plant systems biology: http://www.psb.ugent.be/plantmodels. The course features a series of general lectures by international experts on computational modeling of plants. The week will start with phenomena occurring at the subcellular and cellular scale, including photosynthesis, cell cycle regulation and the organization of the cytoskeleton. Then it will gradually “scale up” to the tissue, organ, and whole plant levels. It will conclude with pattern formation in tissues, the mechanics of growth, and whole plant development and evolution. The morning lectures are accessible to a general audience of plant biologists and are open to everyone without registration. Unfortunately, afternoon computer lab sessions will be accessible only to registered attendants and registration has closed.
