Postdoc position 'Integrated analysis of genomic and epigenomic alterations in developmental disorders' (IB2, ULB, Brussels) A Postdoc position on 'Integrated analysis of genomic and epigenomic alterations in developmental disorders' is available at the Interuniversity Institute of Bioinformatics in Brussels (IB2, Vrije Universiteit Brussel VUB and Université Libre de Bruxelles ULB, Belgium). The research goal is to contribute to the development of new bioinformatic methodologies that could lead to increase the genetic diagnostic yield by integrating multi-omics data (Whole genome sequencing, Infinium DNA methylation). Both fundamental and clinical aspects will be addressed by using NGS data that will be produced in the context of the IGenCare 'Integrated Medical Genomics Care Solution for Patients with Rare Genetic Diseases' project. The position is funded for 2 years by an International research mobility fellowship and could start as early as April 3, 2018. The International research mobility fellowship rules require that the fellow has not resided or carried out its main activity (employment, studies) in Belgium for more than 24 months during the last 3 years. The candidate should hold a PhD in bioinformatics, molecular biology or in computer sciences and demonstrate proficiency in genomics, algorithmics, statistics and in software development (R, python). Experience with whole genome sequencing or massive datasets analysis would be a plus. The applicant should also demonstrate interest for interdisciplinary research. High-throughput technologies allow us to detect transcripts present in a cell or tissue. This course covers practical aspects of the analysis of differential gene expression by RNAseq. Participants will be presented with real world examples and work with them in the training room, covering all the steps of RNAseq analysis, from planning the gathering of sequence data to the generation of tables of differentially expressed gene lists and visualization of results. We we will also cover some of the initial steps of secondary analysis, such as functional enrichment of the obtained gene lists. This course is targeted for Biostatistical techniques often employed in analytical tools for high throughput data and multivariate data. Participants can expect to attend a thorough set of lectures that will reveal the conceptual frameworks that are needed to understand the methods. Extensive hands-on practice will be the main vehicle for providing the skills and user independence. To keep things in context, the course is exclusively based on biological examples. We will be using custom-built R scripts and packages that are available from the CRAN and/or Bioconductor repositories. Care has been taken not to use any proprietary data or software, so that the hands-on experience can carry on after the course, providing maximum user independence. Methodology This intensive course will introduce a relatively high number of concepts and methods. In the context of ELIXIR Training, we aim to build on the existing expertise in this area and, together with the training stakeholders, to derive a proper implementation strategy. This international workshop will bring together individuals from organisations and projects who have expertise in defining and in applying competency bioinformatics and data science frameworks in their own organisations. In a series of interactive sessions, we will build on the existing knowledge and work towards the following workshop goals: * Identify competency frameworks that are relevant to the ELIXIR user community and learn about successful implementation examples of these frameworks * Further define the relevant "personas" we are targeting with (ELIXIR) training * Extract from the existing work a set of core competencies and sets of KSAs (knowledge, skills and abilities) that can subsequently be used: * to map courses in TeSS, the ELIXIR Training Portal * to build a curriculum for a one-week Advanced Bioinformatics Workshop (which will be part of the CODATA RDA Research Data Science Summer school series) * to set the first steps towards defining routes through a specific set of courses (learning paths) Target audience Individuals working in training and education who are interested in learning the state of the art about bioinformatics and data science competency frameworks and their application to date.
